No pricing has been announced to date.

This first-generation product will be targeted primarily to professional users and serious enthusiasts, generally the first to adopt new technology. In particular, content creators will depend on Blu-ray Disc writers to test and evaluate high definition consumer Blu-ray Disc titles during the authoring process before replication.

The drive will come equipped with a data recording application to transfer digital files to Blu-ray Discs. As the market for high definition video camcorders grows, Pioneer says that users will increasingly rely on the Blu-ray Disc drive to store massive amounts of HD video. Likewise, a person with a television tuner on his or her personal computer could use the drive to record high definition television shows for later viewing. The drive also will be able to play consumer Blu-ray Disc movie titles on BD-ROM discs and will play and record standard DVD media. As one of the first products to utilize Blu-ray Disc technology, the drive significantly increases storage capacity, while reducing the number of discs currently needed to back up computer hard drives, digital files and applications. "

The half height BDR-101A Blu-ray Disc/DVD writer will read BD-ROM/R/RE, DVD-ROM/DVD-R/DVD-RW and +R/+RW discs. It offers the following write speeds:

BD-R/RE (2X)

DVD-R/+R (8X)

DVD-RW/+RW (4X)

Escient Serves Up New Media Mgmt. The FireBall DVDM-552 and the FireBall MP-200 Digital Media Player are priced at $5,999 and $999 respectively and should be available in March 2006.

The Fireball DVDM-552, said Escient, allows users to manage up to 2,000 DVDs or CDs through an on-screen menu guide. DVDs and CDs loaded into in a mega-disc changer controlled by the DVDM-552 are cataloged via online disc recognition services which send metadata and cover art back to the Escient box to be stored on its 500GB hard drive. In addition, over 8,000 CDs worth of music can be stored on this drive via the DVDM-552’s CD-RW drive.
DVD viewing can be extended beyond the main room when the DVDM-552 is connected to the FireBall MP-200 Digital Media Player. MP-200 allows users to stream DVDs and stored music across a home network to a second room, allowing for two movies to be watched at the same time. Each MP-200 hooked up to the network uses its own on-screen interface for navigation and disc selection.

“As we celebrate our 10th Anniversary in 2006, our continuing mission is to give our valued custom installation customers the best-in-class products and system-building options that will let them create customized home entertainment systems with unprecedented features and capabilities, both for convenience and for multi-room entertainment,” said Bernie Sepaniak, president of D&M Holdings’ ReplayTV, Escient and ACT divisions. “The DVDM-552, along with the companion MP-200, provides the leading-edge, high-wow-factor features and solutions that support the high-end pricing custom installation experts require, and they represent the pinnacle of media management technology today.”

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://dvd-r-media.blogspot.com/2005/12/escient-serves-up-new-media-mgmt.html' title='Escient Serves Up New Media Mgmt. What is becoming increasingly of concern to both movie studios and disc manufacturers are some of the manufacturing realities of the new formats.

For most of the year consumers have seen the occasional news item on the differences between the technologies and how both sides offer the better solution. One side claims more storage and the other comes out with a new specification in size and this cycle has continued throughout the year. Both formats will give a High Density (HD) level of picture and more features.
Blu-ray appears to have the edge in the market at the moment with movie studios telling us they will have movies for the consumer in 2006. HD-DVD has replied by saying they will give the technology to the Chinese mass producers to flood the market where a similar strategy gave VHS a win over Betamax.

For some time now my support has been behind the HD-DVD camp for a couple of simple reasons - compatibility and price - and it is this last that appears to now be gaining weight as a valid concern for the manufacturers. The Blu-ray product will be more expensive to produce and it will cost the consumer more. The questions are, by how much and for how long"
Let's face it: When it comes to technology, especially the mass market kind, the bottom line for the consumer is cost. If a disc costs $20 (820 baht) for one and $30 (1,230 baht) for the other and they appear to be as good as each other, then the average consumer will chose the $20 version. If the machines are different prices and they do the same job then once again the consumer will go for the lower cost units. The big question is how much will this price difference be"

According to some tests, for example, an HD-DVD manufacturing line will pump out early twice as many useable discs as a similar Blu-ray line. When it comes to the hardware, component costs can also be nearly twice as much because some of the pieces required for the manufacturing process are still hard to find. Sony has challenged these figures but does not have any accurate cost estimates itself at this time but it claims that it will be small.
There are other concerns. The HD-DVD process uses very similar technologies to current DVD and CD production. The Blu-ray system uses a high-tech film layer currently produced only by Sony. Retooling estimates are currently about 10 times for Blu-ray over HD-DVD. Also without a clear winner in advance, supporting both formats for a few years is going to cost the whole industry billions of dollars over that period compared to a single clear winner.

As next year gets closer, the consumer should be wondering if all of the promises will come true, i.e., that Blu-ray units and media will eventually be the same price as HD-DVD, that movie studios will indeed manufacture discs with both formats at the same price or at least with an HD version on one side and a regular DVD version on the other.
Now consider that your TV will not be able to play the new discs or at least it will not support HD's 1,000-line resolution. Take a walk around your local TV store and see how many units you are looking at support the high quality HD standards. Even if you have all the technology what is the new video codec (coder-decoder) going to be"

Microsoft wants to see its VC-1 technology used and until very recently the challenger was the patented technology, MPEG-4 AVC. Then as usual Sony dropped its standard spanner into the works and announced its own new codec. This means that Sony pictures at least will be releasing the first of its Blu-ray discs using the 11-year-old MPEG-2 standard, the same one you see in your current DVD player. If you don't see any problems with this remember the MP3-vs-Sony proprietary codec that no one wanted to use.
Don't decide right now because it is getting even more convoluted that this. The new codecs don't necessarily give you any better picture quality, just allow you to compress more video information onto a disc. Sony tells us that their smallest disc will be 25GB, so a high compression codec isn't required. However Warner is planning to release a modified "Blu-ray" disc with 9GB of storage, i.e., the same storage as a current dual-layer DVD, to keep costs down. Since 9GB isn't enough storage to hold a full HD movie they will be considering the Microsoft VC-1 format. 20th Century Fox, on the other hand, is leaning towards the MPEG4-AVC format.

So where does that leave Jane and Johnny consumer" In a compete mess. When the dust finally settles sometime in the coming year there will be multiple choices for the consumer. They will need to get a better television set and they will have a number of choices to select from. If all things are equal, or close to it, then this will mean a clear standard or winner will not become obvious during 2006. If there is a price difference of more than say 20 per cent then the consumer will make their decision quite early and by Christmas 2006 we should know who lost the race.
At the very least it should be clear what a consumer needs to do, i.e., buy the right disc for the right machine and no matter what the technology it should play just as easily as a DVD does in current machines. What Sony executives seem not to have come to grips with over the past years is that it is no longer true that people will buy it just because it is a Sony. This latest decision to drop everything and build their own codec and so release the first batch of Blu-ray DVDs using MPEG-2 coding could again backfire on the electronics giant. Time will tell.

Industry news
If you haven't heard, Firefox 1.5 is ready for download. This latest version has better security and performance features including a better pop-up blocker and regular security updates. As usual installation was quick and painless. The first time you use it, it takes a bit longer to start up as it is checking for compatibilities. One very nice feature was the detection in my case of an incompatible Yahoo bar. I was given the option to check for a newer version, which it found and installed for me, i.e., painless.

Even if you are not going to use any of the latest features, upgrade your current copy.
Bits and pieces of computer code that can be used for attacks on Windows are appearing on the Internet for download. By the time you read this someone will have released at least one Trojan or spyware product that attacks a flaw in a Windows component for transaction processing, security bulletin MS05-051, or the way Windows handles graphics files, security bulletin MS05-053, and be warned that the vulnerability could create an opening for spyware and Trojan horse attacks. This makes four exploits for these two issues over a one-week period.

Sumdex Bag Discount- $7 off and free shipping on Sumdex Messenger Bag

SuperMediaStore Offers $7 off & Free Shipping on Sumdex (HDD-187BK) Flap Messenger Bag Vertical -Black for $27.90

Coupon: bag7doff
Why is it hot? It will also join the HD DVD Promotion Group, the Toshiba-led industry consortium of HD DVD backers. Supporting both formats probably makes sense in the short term, while the two disc types face up and battle it out for the hearts and minds not only of consumers, but also computer users looking for next-generation, high-capacity storage media.

That said, HP's move seems driven more by pique than pragmatism. It asked the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), of which it's just one of over 70 member companies, to add two features, Mandatory Managed Copy and iHD support, to the format. While MMC is now part of the specification - it allows a disc's content to be duplicated temporarily to, for example, stream it across a home network to a second TV - iHD isn't.
iHD is Microsoft's HD-oriented interactivity sub-system, and will ship with Windows Vista. The BDA has already chosen Java as the BD format's interactivity foundation, and has said that while it will consider including iHD in a future iteration of the specification, it's not going to delay BD's debut to shoehorn it in.Sorry, HP effectively said, that's just not good enough, and we'll support HD DVD if you don't do what we want. So there.

And now it has. Both Microsoft and Intel have thrown their weight behind HD DVD, and we can't help wondering if that hasn't swayed HP into edging away from the Sony-led BD camp. Ironically, HP said only three months ago that BD had the support of the "vast majority" of computer industry, including Dell and Apple, before going on to say how clearly superior BD is to HD DVD.
No longer, it seems. Compare and contrast:

“[iHD] integration will reduce development costs and provide a more affordable solution for consumers,” HP said in a statement issued Friday. “In addition, HD-DVD provides a rich, cost-competitive solution for the consumer and is easier to manufacture."
And this, while rebutting "erroneous" claims from Microsoft:

"From a PC end-user perspective, Blu-ray is a superior format. Its new high-speed RIDATA Laser Pointer USB Drive features a USB 2.0 flash drive with a laser pointer. It is set to be shown at the upcoming 2006 International CES show.

“Our new, easy to use RIDATA thumb-sized portable USB flash drive with laser pointer enables users to securely exchange huge amounts of data between computers or notebooks with a USB port,” stated Harvey Liu, Advanced Media president. “Its plug-and-play simplicity makes connecting to any computer a snap, allowing access virtually anytime, anywhere. No power supply or external cables are required.”

The versatile USB drive also features four new useful functions:

Auto Login: This is a convenient application that automatically enters IDs and passwords from a database created on the USB Drive to Web sites. With Auto Login, users can carry all IDs and Passwords on the USB Drive.

Bookmarks: This feature saves the user’s own Web bookmarks to the device, allowing easy access to them from whatever computer that is connected to the device.

FLASH Mail: A small Email software program, that allows users to access email from the USB Drive.

Secret ZIP: Creates a Secret folder and a Zip folder. This allows users to zip a file by simply dragging the file to the ZIP folder, or a encrypted Zip file by dragging into Secret Folder.

With high storage capacity and blazing fast speeds, the handy RIDATA USB Flash Drive with laser pointer is an ideal choice to replace floppy disks, ZIP disks, and hard disks. This high-speed USB flash drive performs data transfer at a rate up to 19MB/s for read and14MB/s for write in dual-channel mode, and up to 10MB/s for read and 7MB/s for write in single-channel mode.

It supports multiple operating systems: Windows® ME, Windows® 2000, Windows® XP, Mac TM 9.x or later, Linux TM Kernel 2.4 or later (no driver needed); Windows® 98 and Windows® 98SE (driver enclosed). It also comes with a security lock (Safety Zone); is shock proof; and has power-saver functionality. An advanced software package is included.

The class II laser pointer has an average wavelength of 650nm, and will make a 0.4-inch spot from approximately 11 feet. It meets TUV, FDA, and ROSH requirements.

The RIDATA Laser Pointer USB Drve is available in 128MB, 256MB, 512MB , and1GB capacity sizes. With uncompressed storage capacities achieving 1.6 TeraBytes per disk and data rates as high as 120 MBPs, holographic technology is a true breakthrough in optical media. These features, along with a long archival life, make holographic media a compelling choice for storage and archival requirements.
Holographic data storage is superior to existing disc and hard drive technologies, and is also competitive against tape technologies in capacities and transfer rate. In addition, it offers a 50+ year media archive life and random data access. Finally, the media is expected to have the lowest cost per gigabyte of any commercial quality removable storage.

"Holographic media makes it possible for millions of pages of information and high definition images to be held on one small, relatively inexpensive disc," said Steven Pofcher, senior marketing manager at Maxell. "Imagine having a person's entire medical history, complete with MRI images, or storing a broadcast network's entire HD Library on a single disc. These are both possible with holographic technology, which has such large capacity that approximately a half million 300-page books can be stored on a single disc."
Holographic recording technology utilizes intersecting signal and reference laser beams to store data in a number of 3D hologram images capable of saving hundreds of data pages in a single location. One 5¼ inch-diameter optical disc can store up to 150 million pages - more than 63 times the capacity of DVD. Also, with holographic recording, a multiple of form factors, such as discs, cards, etc., and laser wavelengths (red, green, and blue) can be used.

"Combining high storage densities and fast transfer rates with durable, reliable, low cost media, Holographic technology is poised to become a compelling choice for next-generation storage and content distribution needs," said Liz Murphy, vice president of marketing for InPhase Technologies. "Unlike other technologies that record one data bit at a time, holography allows a million bits of data to be written and read in parallel with a single flash of light. This enables transfer rates significantly higher than current optical storage devices."
The first generation of holographic media with 300 GB of storage capacity and a 20 MBPs Transfer Rate is scheduled for release in late 2006.

Toner Cartridge Discount- Canon Toner Cartridge for $33.15

SuperMediaStore Offers 15% off on Canon L50 Compatible Copier Toner Cartridge for $33.15

Coupon: happy15p
Why is it hot? The first drive will have a capacity of 300GB and a throughput of 160Mbps.
Holographic storage works by storing information using light-sensitive crystals. Because it uses the whole volume of the disk, not just the surface, it's possible to store much more information than is possible on a DVD.

With a single holographic disk able to store 1.6 million high-resolution colour photos or over 240 hours of TV broadcast, holographic storage is starting to draw the attention of many in the IT industry.

"Holographic media makes it possible for millions of pages of information and high definition images to be held on one small, relatively inexpensive disc," said Steven Pofcher, senior marketing manager at Maxell.
"Imagine having a person's entire medical history, complete with MRI images, or storing a broadcast network's entire HD [high-definition] Library on a single disc. These are both possible with holographic technology, which has such large capacity that approximately half a million 300-page books can be stored on a single disc."

Holographic recording technology uses intersecting signal and reference laser beams to store data in a number of 3D holographic images.
According to Maxell, one 13cm optical disc can store up to 150 million pages — more than 63 times the capacity of DVD.

Earlier this month, Turner Entertainment's vice-president of broadcast technology Ron Tarasoff said his company is planning to sell holographic disks that will retail for $100, and which in five years time will have a capacity of 1.6TB each.

"That's pretty inexpensive," said Tarasoff. "Even the first versions can store 300GB per disk, and it has 160Mbps data throughput rates. That's burning. Then combine it with random access, and it's the best of all worlds."

The technology also has an impressive lineage. Hitachi-owned Maxell is working with InPhase Technologies, a subsidiary of Lucent, which has led development of holographic media.

The proposed disk and drive

Hardware Discount Special- Bluetake Bluetooth Headphone with FREE pouch and Free Shipping

* SuperMediaStore Offers Bluetake BT 420 EX I-Phono Bluetooth Hi-Fi Sport Headphone with FREE pouch - Free Ground Shipping

Coupon: thanksgiving10
Why is it hot? While incompatible with each other, both formats will allow you to record 'crystal-clear' images and large amounts of computer data. Currently, the Minnesota-based Imation is busy at work testing both single-layer and double-layer advanced optical formats.

And according to Richard Weiss, vice president of research and development at Imation, no one does it better:

“The exact standards and expertise needed to develop Blu-ray and HD-DVD require focus and experience that few companies possess…we are in a solid position to deliver future formats when and where our customers want them.”

Throughout 2006, Imation plans to launch the BD-RE (rewritable) and BDR (recordable) 25GB single layer and 50GB double layer Blu-ray formats. Labelflash burns custom motifs, lettering or images onto the top side of DVD media.

NEC's ND-3551A

The drives will not only support DVD +R(W) and DVD-R(W) but also DVD-RAM.

Labelflash delivers high image quality because it enables 256 brightness shades. The labelling process takes only around seven minutes. One special feature is that both the top side and the data side of the blank can be labelled - provided that there is enough available memory.

Labelflash can be used for blanks with a writable Labelflash top surface. On these media, the labelled top surface is covered by 0.6 millimetre-thick, protect layer which ensures that even labels that are exposed to light are extremely durable.

The burner supports DVD-R and DVD+R media recording at up to 16x DVD speed, while rewritable (DVD +RW) and double-layer DVDs (DVD +R9) are written at up to 8x DVD speed. DVD-RW and DVD-R DL are processed at 6x speed. 5x speed applies for DVD-RAMs. As a read drive, the burner delivers 16x DVD, 5x DVD RAM and 48x CD speed. NEC will also be marketing a lower cost model without Labelflash, the ND-4550A, which has the same write and read speeds as the ND-4551A.

The two new DVD burners ND-3551A (with Labelflash) and ND-3550A (without Labelflash) are also available in two further versions which do not support DVDRAM.

Iomega Announces Multimedia HD

Iomega has announced the new "ScreenPlay Multimedia Drive", a portable hard drive with built-in multimedia playback capability, that makes it a digital media jukebox for photos, songs and video files that can be used with virtually any television or audio-video system.

The "ScreenPlay Multimedia Drive" offers freedom to enjoy digital video, photo albums, music collections and work files on any TV or A/V receiver - without the need for a computer. Iomega maintains that the device is aimed at families and road warriors, who have long struggled with the inconvenience of transporting computer-based digital media (audio, video, and still image files).

The "ScreenPlay Multimedia Drive" is an external hard drive with audio and video outputs, built-in multimedia playback capability, and a set of DVD-style playback buttons. At 132 x 77.2 x 17.8 mm, the "ScreenPlay Multimedia Drive" uses on-screen TV navigation to help users select a video, song list, or slide show. The ScreenPlay drive comes with its own wireless remote control, making it easy to navigate the menus from across the room.

A USB 2.0 port enables fast data transfer with a computer at hard-drive speeds; outputs include NTSC or PAL analog video (using composite or S-Video connectors), and analog stereo audio (using RCA connectors).

Brian Still, manager - product and channel marketing, Iomega Corporation, said, "The Iomega 'ScreenPlay Multimedia Drive' is a great 60GB portable hard drive, with built-in multimedia features that make it the ideal digital media player for virtually any television or A/V receiver."

"People can liberate their audio, video and photo files from the PC and take them anywhere, whether it's the living room, a hotel, grandmother's house, the client's office or the conference room. The Iomega 'ScreenPlay Multimedia Drive' brings a new level of convenience and personalization, so you can watch and listen to what you want, when you want, without the need of being connected to a computer", said Still.

When connected to a computer's USB 2.0 port, the "ScreenPlay Multimedia Drive" operates like a normal 60 GB hard drive. Music, photos and video files can be simply copied from the host computer.

When connected to a TV or A/V system, the "ScreenPlay Multimedia Drive" becomes a media jukebox streaming popular video formats directly to TV, via its S-Video or composite video connectors; compatible formats include MPEG-1 (AVI, MPG, DAT), MPEG-2 (AVI, VOB), and MPEG-4 (AVI, XviD). It also can handle JPEG photos of up to 8 Megapixel resolution, motion JPEG files at 15 or 30 frames per second (digital camera movies), and MP3 digital audio files.

The "ScreenPlay Multimedia Drive" is compatible with Pentium III-class or equivalent processor or higher, running Microsoft Windows Win98/SE, Me/2000/XP Home or Professional. It is also compatible with Mac OS X (10.2) or higher.

The new Iomega "ScreenPlay Multimedia Drive" is available for a suggested retail price of $219.95. At around £60 each, the suites target users who want to do more with their DVD writer than simply burn data discs. Instead, the suites embrace a wide range of media production tasks.

Both suites are composed of multiple individual modules – Nero counts 18, Roxio has 25 – most of which are accessible via a launcher or individually through Windows' Programs menu.
In spite of the packages' similarities, the two vendors' approaches to software design couldn't be more different. Nero has a tradition – continued in version 7 – of adding cool features without much concern about how simple they are to access or master. Roxio not only adds features, but it also expends more effort making its suite easier to use – a daunting task given the sheer number of components involved.

Nero 7 Ultra Edition's new advanced features include high-definition video editing, 7.1-channel surround-sound editing, a musical beat editor and dance synthesizer that exports files to the sound editor, and a living-room interface. However, Nero's unfriendly design and workflow could use a complete rethinking.

By contrast, Roxio has made significant progress toward improving its product's ease of use in version 8, as well as adding features such as a DVD music disc function and high-resolution video editing. Simple data and disc-maintenance chores are now easily accessible, and virtually every component has been imbued with the attractive look and logical workflow that version 7 introduced. The result is a much more cohesive feel, though the overlapping capabilities of many modules can still get confusing.

Data

Between Nero Burning ROM and Roxio Creator Classic, Nero remains our choice of the two old-school data-burning applications – even though it retains a poorly organized interface. Roxio's Creator Classic program may be prettier and easier to use, but it simply can't match the wide variety of CD and DVD disc projects, the disc image handling, and the integrated audio ripping and encoding that Nero Burning ROM offers.
If you want friendly, direct access to your burning functions, however, go with Roxio. It now integrates the most common disc tasks – such as simple data CD/DVD burning, as well as disc copying, erasing, and finalizing -- into its Roxio Home launch module, making those functions simpler to access. Nero's equivalent launch module, StartSmart, is not nearly as direct, but it is configurable.

Audio

Both packages are amped up with new audio features that extend far beyond basic ripping, encoding, and burning. Power users will appreciate the 7.1-channel surround-sound editing and individual-track special effects in Nero's SoundTrax editing component. Nero also has a fun new feature – its SoundBox rhythm box/sample synthesizer allows you to create cool dance grooves.

As fun as Nero's sound mixing may be, Roxio's new, brilliantly simple DVD music disc function is far more useful. In this mode, Roxio creates a DVD movie disc, ditches the video to produce more space for an audio track (created from imported MP3s and other audio files), and uses the DVD menu to sort and provide access to the tunes. You can fit far more music on a 4.7GB DVD than on an audio CD – and you can play it in any DVD drive or player.

DVD authoring

Though Nero's DVD authoring capabilities are decent, Roxio has the distinct edge. Its templates make the task easy. Plus, the suite adds some good image editing, organizing, and secure Web sharing capabilities.

By comparison, Nero Vision 4's restrictive workflow and arcane language make the otherwise powerful application seem crude. Nero's suite also has no answer for Roxio's CineMagic, which deftly automates the production of video discs with professional-looking menus, fades, and musical tracks.

Video

Each suite offers extensive and capable video capture and editing. For editing, Roxio's stand-alone VideoWave 8 component is more traditional and easier to learn, and supplies more on-screen storyboard space than Nero Vision 4.

When it comes to the high-resolution video handling new to both suites, though, Nero has the advantage. VideoWave 8 and Nero Vision 4 can now edit and export high-definition video (up to 1920-x-1080 resolution, also known as 1080i). However, Roxio exports to DivX HD or Windows Media 9 HD, which may cause compatibility issues. Nero's export format (Nero Digital) is completely compatible with H.264, one of the codecs included in both the Blu-ray and HD-DVD specs.

Many experts believe that H.264 is the heir apparent to MPEG-2 – which means you would be able to play your video five years from now. Exporting video in high definition can be time-consuming, though – a five-minute 1440-x-1080 clip created on a Sony DV camcorder takes more than two hours to reencode.

Both suites can compress dual-layer content to fit on a single 4.7GB DVD. For this task Nero's Recode offers more options by far, but has a nearly unfathomable interface.

Backup

Roxio includes the robust, full-featured Backup MyPC 6, and adds a new, simpler Backup component for uncompressed file backups to disc or hard drive. However, the new Backup component has no restore function, relying instead on the stand-alone Roxio Retrieve program that's stored with the backup. That may be handy for CD/DVD backups, but a pain when you want only to restore from a hard drive.

Nero improves its backup capabilities over those of previous versions with dramatic changes to BackItUp – the only component in the suite whose workflow and interface the company took the time to rethink and reorganize. Not only is defining a backup much easier than before, but a new calendar lets multiple users schedule backups from across a network, and you can now image (back up to one large file) a boot partition. You can even save a new job before executing it.

Interface interplay

Easy Media Creator 8 is easier to learn than Nero 7. However, the suite's large number of modules, numerous ways to launch those modules, and multiple methods to perform the same task often invoke interface sensory overload. Easy Media Creator 8's interface is sluggish compared with Nero's.

In the end though, Roxio Easy Media Creator 8 is still your best bet for easily producing professional-looking DVD projects or making DVD music discs. Power users, will still reach for Nero, as it offers a slightly superior set of features – but only if you have the patience to master the package's maddeningly complex interface.

Beyon Burning

Roxio and Nero produce the two leading disc-burning suites, and they've raised the stakes with their respective new versions.

Roxio's Easy Media Creator 8 and Nero's Nero 7 Ultra Edition show that the battle for supremacy in this market is still hotly contested. Power users, will still reach for Nero, as it offers a slightly superior set of features – but only if you have the patience to master the package's maddeningly complex interface.

Sumdex Bag Special- Compact Camera Case at $8.85

SuperMediaStore offers Free Ground Shipping on Sumdex POC-453KK Compact Camera Case at $8.85

Why is it hot? While there are various ways the manufacturers can check for common defects such as layer thickness, bubbles embedded in the disc and so on, the only way to examine the actual pits on the disc is by analysing it using optoelectrical reference drives.

TOPTICA Photonics developed such a reference drive, which is designed to test the quality of both Blu-ray and HD DVD optical media, such as to determine whether the disc presser is wearing out or if there are issues with the moulding process. In order to ensure that each reference drive returns equal results for a given disc, each drive is calibrated against a master reference disc from Sony, Philips or Toshiba during the manufacturing process.

In order to cut the cost of replicating discs, forward error correction algorithms are used in order to allow for a certain amount of errors caused by physical defects present on the disc as well as errors during the pick-up process. So, in order to check for errors before the error correction stages, the reference works directly on the raw optical pick-up data. Finally, to allow the drive to work with both HD DVD and Blu-ray media, it ships a 0.65 numerical aperture lens for HD DVD Media and a 0.85 numerical aperture lens for Blu-ray Media. The production testers for Microsoft's Xbox360 HD DVD discs will be one of the first to use these reference drives.

"TOPTICA Photonics of Germany has developed a reference drive for testing the quality of Blu-ray and HD DVD optical discs. Dubbed HUSKY and said to be the first of its kind, the drive can identify production faults such as a worn disc stamper or poor molding conditions.

Blu-ray and HD DVD disc manufacturers are being forced to operate within much tighter production tolerances thanks to the tiny data structures found on next generation optical discs. While defects such as tilt, sputter variations, layer thickness or bubbles in the disc can be studied by a variety of in-line inspection methods, the disc’s microscopic bit structure can only be analyzed using opto-electrical reference drives."

It seems like this drive essentially does a similar process to LiteOn’s KProbe tool, since it reports low level error information directly from the disc. However, the main difference here is that while each LiteOn DVD writer may produce different results with KProbe for the same disc, these reference drives for testing HD DVD and Blu-ray media are calibrated to all produce the same results for a given disc.

The Content of this post is provide by cdfreaks.com

Big saving on Canon Toner Cartridge, Sumdex CD/VD Wallet, Apple iPod Charger, and Memina Rocket 2GB Flash Drive

1) Supermediastore offer 10% off on Canon L50 Compatible Copier Toner Cartridge for CANON PC COPIER 1060/1080 SERIES for $33.75

Coupon: tonerdeal325
Why is it hot? For the first review, we’ve chosen to shift our focus to the ‘Non-Burning’ aspects of Nero, starting with Nero Home.

This is a central application, where users can access and manage media files from their PC or TV (if they have the appropriate video cards). Nero Home integrates TV recording, time-shifting and DVD playback. It also offers features like audio and photo playback. All this is done with a simple and professional looking interface for beginners and loyal Nero customers alike.

The introduction nearly makes you feel weightless when looking at the aesthetically pleasing watery blue backdrop and the five easy choices that are floating in front of you.

Although the program is highly sophisticated, it still comes down to its effectiveness in finding simplicity. The design is simple and easy to follow. Things are categorized and subcategorized within Nero’s own folders. In Nero Home, you can choose between Audio, Playlists, Photos, Video & TV and Devices. The last being a direct link to your own computer but with a different interface. Anything that could be played or viewed is accessible and interacts within Nero splendidly.

The next ‘Non-Burning’ Nero application I looked at was Nero BackItUp. This all-in-one wonder tool offers backup and restore support.

A simple backup of any desired files on your system can be performed right before your eyes. If that’s not enough for you, you can decide to make a complete backup of specific drives of your choosing.
If you get really bored and never want to worry about backups again, a regular cycle of backups can be set up and catalogued through Nero’s Calendar function. With complete reports and performance reviews of prior backups, this system has a similar feel to Veritas, the professional backup tool used by many IT Techs.

Nero Cover Design comes in handy whenever you need to make any CD or DVD cover. It’s a breeze to use and its interface has a common paint program attribute that most people are used to seeing.
If you don’t have time to be artsy fartsy, but still want quality to your CD cover, there’s no need to worry. A built in template for any type of Music and Data CD format is already included. I was impressed by the many scenarios Nero Cover Designer was prepared for. You can manipulate the templates and your own designs on standard, DVD cases, multi-box session, slim pack and business cards.

It’s easy enough to put the image on the designated spot and print it out.

Moving onto ‘Media Home’, I’m surprised to see how many different sorts of applications Nero has thought of combining into one product. Essentially, MediaHome is a way to share any files over an allocated network.
Worthwhile for quick transfers in a business environment or small personal network, this speedy tool easily proves its functionality. Although there might be some firewall issues initially, they could very well continue… I myself had problems when it came to Starting the server since I couldn’t download the necessary update files.

Although the server did not have every file necessary for updating, I was still able to start it. I can’t really comment on what the updates would have or could have done, but this is the first time that Nero hasn’t come through all the way with one of their applications.
Nero’s PhotoSnap software appears to be an easy application to use and furthermore, understand. For basic and essential quick fixes, everything is at one’s disposal.

By essentials, I mean to say the quick fix basics that most users want: autofix, resize, crop, Red eye, color, brightness/contrast and many more. I was able to sharpen the detail of an image without going through about 12 steps as I normally would with a more specialized program like Photoshop.
This is a quick, hands on, easy to use, get to the point imaging center revolving on most people’s needs. I like that they anticipated most user’s needs and only included these fundamental functions in the interface, only expanding toward more intricate operations in the ‘Other Effects’ button.

It’s great for multi purpose quick projects. People will like to play around and manipulate images to their liking.

I had a tough time deciding whether or not to add Nero Showtime 2 to this review since I figured that most would be watching the movies they just burned on this player. Yet, since it seems to fit more with the general concept that it’s something you view rather than burn, it naturally had to fall in this category.

In all honesty, it’s similar to most DVD players out there. The closest being WIN DVD. That’s not to say it isn’t good, but the functionality of Play, Stop Rewind and Forward doesn’t excite me too much. It has all the things you want to play DVD’s, doesn’t that make you happy enough?

Last on the review is Nero’s WaveEditor. This gizmo has so many options to tune, tweak, squeak, amp, regulate, dilute, pitch, bend, stutter and beat into place any rhythm, melody or song that you might happen to have at your disposal.

The scenic silhouette of the song’s amplitude is the first sign of professionalism. Well, not really, but it does make it look quite fancy. I played around with Beethoven’s Symphony Nr. 9 so much that it sounded like a bird chirping by the time I got through with it.

Even without the musical know-how I was able to play around and enjoy myself to a certain point. The interface and options that are offered are aesthetically appealing and clear to almost anyone, but I don’t know what the hardcore users will think. For a non-professional musician like myself, I was overwhelmed by the limitless options and easy-to-use interface.
The Good

From all the applications that are included with Nero 7, PhotoSnap gave me the greatest pleasure. Nero Home was also a joy to use. Every aspect of Nero was professionally done and anyone who uses this product will see just that.
The Bad

There’s just so much! The install size is huge, when did Nero become such a hog?
The Truth

Even though the install is quite hefty, Nero's managed to transform itself into a full system managing program. With players, burners, visual programs, audio editing software and much more (believe me). With all these new toys to tinker with, you will definitely NOT get bored with any of its easy to use interfaces. This is a two-thumbs-up product.

The content of this posting is provided by softpedia.com

Prodisc Silver Inkjet Printable 8X DVD-R Media for $29.99

1) SuperMediaStore offers 100 Pack Prodisc Silver Inkjet Printable 8X DVD-R Media $29.99

Why is it hot?
